What is a condition of release in relation to superannuation?

Regulation 6.18 of Superannuation Industry (Supervision) Regulations 1994 (SISR 1994), states that a member's preserved benefits in a regulated superannuation fund may be cashed (paid) on or after a condition of release has been satisfied.

Events that satisfy a condition of release are outlined in SISR 1994 Schedule 1, and include the following:

·         Retirement;

·         Death;

·         Terminal medical condition;

·         Temporary incapacity;

·         Permanent incapacity;

·         Severe financial hardship;

·         Compassionate grounds;

·         Attaining age 65; and

·         Attaining preservation age.
